I really take that statement to heart. I attempt to emulate that in everything I do—and yes, that includes shopping.
I personally believe you should dress your best for everything you do, but it doesn’t have to be at the expense of your financial happiness. I have shared a lot of my thrifted wardrobe with each of you, but I have never really shared my admiration for shoes. It’s a deep thought but one worth thinking about, so please stay with me as I explain . . .
I believe an outfit will always be just an outfit without fun accessories and a good pair of polished shoes.
Have you ever seriously considered the people you admire the most? Where do they come from? How did they get to where they are? What steps did they take to achieve such an honor of being someone you admire? I bet you can answer those questions quickly but have you thought about the clothes they wear and the shoes that finish the looks they pull off on a daily basis? I am confident you will quickly realize that each of them is wearing shoes that confirm they put their best “foot” forward every single day.
With that being said, close your eyes and think about the shoes you wear. Do you wear them for comfort, trendiness, climate, or just out of plain necessity? What are the things that you think about when selecting a pair of shoes? Do the shoes have character? Are they comfortable? Do they make a bold statement? If the answer is no to any of those—do not purchase that pair! However, if the answer is yes, buy the shoes and worry only about what they will pair well with later.
You see, subconsciously, shoes play a major role in our daily journey and our overall presentation to society. If our shoes lack character, they will be boring and minimize your overall happiness for the day. If our shoes are not comfortable, we won’t want to walk in them, and therefore our confidence will not be as vibrant. I am sure you are getting the point by now: Shoes are important, and they finish each outfit by adding that extra layer of character that will allow you to be the best version of yourself.
I say all that to say this: You can find amazing designer shoes at your local Goodwill store. Most of the shoes I have purchased there are brand new and would have been something I selected at the mall; however, I would have chosen to put them back in the box, because I wouldn’t have paid their original price in a traditional retail establishment.
Here are a couple of the ones I have recently purchased:
Two weeks ago, while enjoying a Sunday/Funday stroll through my local Goodwill, I found these Kate Spade Pumps.
When I first saw them, I researched them (Yes, I always research my potential items for their full retail amounts while shopping) and found they retailed for $298. I paid $6.50 for the same style, thanks to Goodwill.
Unfortunately, they were not my size, so I then offered them for sale on my Facebook resale page (The Thrifty Southern Belle Clutch Closet) as a fun gesture.
However, if they had been my size, they would have definitely made the cut and been added to my personal collection. They exuded class, were comfortable, and made a nice modest statement.
Another pair that I am quite fond of that I found at my local store are these Manolo Blahnik suede knee-high boots.
They retail for $1,500; again, I paid $6.50. They were brand new and in pristine condition! For those of you who are not familiar with this designer, Manolo Blahnik is the current First Lady, Melania Trump’s, go-to shoe designer—and for good reason! His shoes have character, they are comfortable, and they always make a polished, bold statement.
I hope you are now intrigued and have enjoyed learning about my personal thoughts on shoes. Please take a stroll through those aisles on your next visit to your local store. You will be surprised at the treasures you can add to your shoe collection. Those thrifted treasures will allow you to put your best foot forward every single day (without breaking your budget!).
As always, please share your thrifted treasures and please tag me @thethriftysouthernbelle!
