Rugs are expensive. Let me backtrack, appropriately sized rugs are expensive.
One of the top decorating mistakes I see on Instagram is people putting rugs in spaces that are too small. To be honest some rules aren’t meant to be broken. Since I know rugs are pricey, the thrift store is always one of my secret weapons to find a good deal on a large rug.
Everyone likes different things, but most people like the same trendy design style. I was really surprised when I showed up extremely late to a 50% off sale at my local thrift store and ran smack dab into this $40 area rug!
For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why no one wanted to purchase this rug? I do have a thing for unearthing amazing finds in plain sight, but this rug, I couldn’t believe it was walked over, waiting for me to snag it!
I unrolled the rug only to find out it was huge! Of course, that didn’t deter me, I bought it anyway. I mean a rug that’s 13.25 x 10.5 would cost nearly $700 plus dollars and this was just the price of two large pizzas.
I did manage to get it home and it was too large. Meh, that’s a small price to pay for such a massive decor piece. The rug was a perfect match for my decor, black.
I am preparing for a dinner party at home and I saw another rug for almost $50 and I needed to fit this one into my dining area. So, as with most things we buy second hand, we change it to fit our needs and that’s exactly what I did.
I ripped the border off the rug, made it a little smaller so that it could fit into the dining area slash temporary living room.
When people ask me what should they buy from a thrift store to save some money on decorating, I always say buy whatever you want as long as you can use it and are happy with it in your space.
When I saw my new to me rug, I knew for sure it was my style but was too large. However, all I needed was some time to size it down and it would be perfect.
Has anyone ever scored an amazing rug from Goodwill?
