Holiday Decorating Crunch Time

The holiday season has just started. Thanksgiving was a blast with all of my family and am so grateful to have spent time with them, but now its holiday decorating crunch time.

We have Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas and New Years – all of which will require a good dose of decorating for various parties and get-togethers. I have been entertaining for years so it really comes easy to me. However, it wasn’t always this way. One of my secret tips to creating a lavish and welcoming home for my guests and partygoers is to take a peek at how high-end retailers and event planners style spaces for the holidays. Many times you can find similar pieces at your local Goodwill store.

When I entertain at home, I use real napkins. If it is a dinner party I arrange the napkins on the table. When it’s not a dinner party, I use various dishes and trays to hold my napkins.

Placing your favorite napkins in an ornate silver or antique tray is a good way of adding simple and inexpensive elegance to your holiday setup. The aged elements of these trays adds so much. I place these trays throughout my home because people are always asking “Where are the napkins?” So just having them out and about creates convenience for everyone.

TIP: If you collect trays throughout the year, you won’t have to wait until the last minute to find them. Always collect various sizes and styles of trays and even small urns. Smaller pieces can be used for wrapped candy and mints.

Using trays for napkins and mints is one of my go-to design secrets.

I also use vintage serving trays in the bathroom when I have guests.

A tray corrals everything your guest will need. This is a great one stop shop so they don’t have to plunder through all of your closets looking for the hand soap.

TIP: Whenever you are traveling and staying in a hotel, request additional toiletry items (to use later when you are entertaining). This is great because it is cost effective and you don’t have to use your personal goods when you have a house full of people.

Christmas ornaments can really be used all year long, but a great way to display a collection of ornaments is to place them is glass jars. This is a very simple idea, but it adds so much warmth to the space.

Goodwill is a great place to find unique jars for floral arrangements and ornaments.

If you purchase needed items all year you can score some great styling pieces such as urns for your space. Large urns can be extremely expensive in a retail store, so finding one at Goodwill is a major plus. You can fill antique urns with so many different things, including the standard floral arrangement. Flowers always add that special touch when you are entertaining.

TIP: Custom floral arrangements can be very expensive, one easy way to save money is to purchase prearranged piece from your local grocery store. A lot of supermarkets have a great floral department and if you purchase them a few days in advance you can really get excellent blooms.

Most people want to entertain during the holiday season and Goodwill is the perfect place to pick up those special touches. Whether you are purchasing urns, vintage trays or glass jars you can be certain with just a bit if creativity you can save and have a stylish soiree for you and your guests!
