DIY Inlay Chest, Part 1

We have this chest in our guest room that belonged to my husband when he was growing up. I’ve been wanting to paint it for a while–something that would make a statement–but, I wasn’t sure what to do. That is, until I revisted this post by Jenny at Little Green Notebook.


Her DIY Inlay Dresser is a show stopper and my inspiration for this piece. This would be a great project for a dresser from Goodwill.

I started by removing those fancy brass handles and gave it a good sanding. I went back and forth between using an electric sander and sanding it by hand because some spots were hard to get to with the electric sander. Also, I used a rough paper. Normally, you would go over it again with a fine sand paper, but I was using a foam roller to paint it, so I didn’t think I needed the fine paper.

Then, I wiped it down with a damp rag and used a small foam roller to add my paint color. I used a non-VOC paint and primer in one and it still needed about 4 coats. This is 3 coats in…

I love the pink! After it dried, I knew it was the right decision. I’m so excited to share the finished project!
