A DIY Pet Sweater for Your Precious Pooch

Dachshunds are wonderful pups. I would go so far as to say they are the finest breed…you know…when they’re not barking (at nothing), peeing on the floor (even though they just went out), or when they give you that adorable “Who, me?” look after chewing up your favorite shoes.

However, as this scarf by The Hankerer indicates, they are also very verrrrrrry long.

This is only a slight dramatization.

I happen to own a weiner dog named Douglas.  He gets cold very easily…to the point of not wanting to go outside.  I’ve tried to purchase sweaters for him, but because they’re so short on him, he ends up looking like he’s wearing a crop top (Acceptable for a teen girl in the 90’s, but not so much for a dog in 2015).

When I refashioned this dress for my blog, ReFashionista, the leftovers gave me a great idea!

Those sleeves were the perfect length for my longer-than-typical pup!

A few small cuts were made.

Measure the length, then trim the extra fabric.

And just look at Douglas now!

Doesn't he look warm?

So…if you have a small dog and an uneeded sleeve from a sewing project, don’t toss it out!

  1. I use sleeves from sweaters and sweatshirts to make coats for small dogs in the animal shelter.

    • What a nice thing. It’s so very lovely that you put your old things to use for some great dogs who are waiting for their forever home! 🙂

  2. Douglas is so cute! What a great idea. I will be trying this for my weenie dog, Mike. 🙂
Mike looks a lot like Douglas. I also have to giggle a little because Douglas is my husband’s name. Hehehe.

  3. I couldn’t help but laugh,,,,,my doxie, Buddy, is so like Douglas,,,,,he’s sitting on my lap just shaking as I’m typing my response,,,,,,now where did I stash that long sleeve??

  4. So cute! What a great idea!

  5. I don’t have a cute little dog like Douglas, I have a 60-lb Potcake named Katy Kumquat. Since Katy likes to be in our large fenced yard during the day, and it doesn’t get too cold all that much in Florida, I bought a small size sweatshirt and just stitched it up a bit to fit her. It’s lasted for three years and she’s VERY hard on her clothes 🙂

  6. Let’s not forget the other LONG dog breed… CORGIS! They are not as long as doxies but just long enough that any dog clothes look a tad short on them. I should know, I have 2 corgis. I have resorted to getting sizes to match their length and taking them in for a better fit. I had to do this with their winter coats. Walking dogs in the mountains with several feet of snow is a joy. Not really. And yes they wear boots. The trails are salted here.

  7. This is so cute. I may have to cut something up just to make matching sweaters for my little dogs.
